Overview
A 3-day safari to the Masai Mara departing from Diani Beach by flight is a great way to maximize your time and make the most of your safari experience. Flying directly from Ukunda Airport (Diani) to the Masai Mara reduces travel time significantly, giving you more time in the park for game drives and relaxation. Here's an optimized itinerary for a 3-day safari with a flight safari:
Day 1: Diani Beach to Masai Mara (Flight Safari)
- Morning Flight from Diani to Masai Mara:
- Start your day with a morning flight from Ukunda (Diani Beach) to the Masai Mara. The flight takes approximately 1 hour and will land at one of the Mara airstrips, such as Mara Naboisho or Keekorok.
- Flights are usually scheduled around 9:00 AM or earlier, so you’ll have a chance to reach the Mara by mid-morning.
- Arrival and Game Drive:
- Upon arrival, you'll be met by your lodge or camp’s safari vehicle, which will transport you to your accommodation.
- After checking in and having a quick lunch, head out on your first game drive in the Masai Mara. This is your introduction to the park, and you’ll have the chance to spot a variety of animals including elephants, lions, cheetahs, zebras, and giraffes.
- Overnight Stay in Masai Mara:
- Return to your lodge or camp in the Masai Mara for dinner and spend the night. Some great options include Mara Serena Safari Lodge, Keekorok Lodge, or Mara Intrepids Tented Camp.
Day 2: Full Day Safari in Masai Mara
- Early Morning Game Drive:
- Wake up early for a morning game drive at dawn. The early hours are the best time to spot wildlife, especially predators like lions and cheetahs.
- Breakfast at the Lodge:
- Return to your lodge or camp for a hearty breakfast after your game drive.
- Optional Activities:
- After breakfast, you have some time to relax or participate in optional activities:
- Maasai Village Visit: Learn about the rich culture of the Maasai people and their way of life.
- Hot Air Balloon Safari: Experience the Mara from above during a hot air balloon safari (usually in the early morning), followed by a champagne breakfast in the bush.
- After breakfast, you have some time to relax or participate in optional activities:
- Afternoon Game Drive:
- After lunch, head out for another afternoon game drive. The Masai Mara is famous for its "Big Five" and the Great Migration (July to October). Depending on the time of year, you may witness the migration, where thousands of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles make their way across the Mara River, followed by predators.
- Overnight Stay in Masai Mara:
- Return to your accommodation for dinner and enjoy a peaceful evening in the Mara.
Day 3: Masai Mara to Diani Beach (Flight)
- Morning Game Drive:
- Start your day with an early morning game drive. This will be your final opportunity to spot wildlife and capture some last photos of the Mara’s stunning landscapes and animals.
- Return Flight to Diani:
- After breakfast, you’ll be transferred back to the airstrip for your return flight to Diani Beach.
- Flights usually depart in the late morning (around 11:00 AM), and you'll arrive back in Diani by early afternoon (approximately 1:00 PM).
- Arrival in Diani:
- Once you arrive back at Ukunda Airport (Diani), your safari ends. From here, you can return to your beach resort or continue with other plans.
